From a Mickey Mouse Timex to Swiss Made: Why I Started a Watch Brand Instead of Buying One
By the founder of MAESLUX
Every collector remembers their first watch. Mine had Mickey Mouse on the dial.
It was a Timex — nothing rare, nothing valuable, nothing a collector would look at twice today. My father handed it to me when I was a boy, and I strapped it on without understanding what I was really receiving. He wore a Bulova every single day of his working life. To me, that Bulova wasn't jewelry. It was part of who he was: the first thing on his wrist in the morning, a quiet signal that he took his time — and his responsibilities — seriously.
I didn't know it then, but that Mickey Mouse Timex was the beginning of everything.
The Problem With Modern "Luxury"
Decades later, when I finally decided to build a watch brand of my own, I spent months studying the market before designing a single case. What I found frustrated me.
The watch industry has split into two extremes. On one side, heritage Swiss houses whose prices have climbed far beyond what most enthusiasts can justify — you're often paying for a crown logo and a waiting list, not just a movement. On the other side, a flood of drop-shipped "luxury" brands: quartz watches in gold-toned cases, invented backstories, fake countdown timers, and marketing language borrowed from Geneva without a single component to back it up.
Between those extremes sits a growing community of collectors who simply want the truth: a mechanical watch with a movement they can name, materials they can verify, and a design that will still look right in twenty years.
MAESLUX was built for exactly that space. Not to compete with the giants — to correct what the noise got wrong.
What "Correcting" Actually Means
It's easy to write words like precision and craftsmanship on a website. Here is what they mean in practice at MAESLUX:
A movement with a real name. Our CHRYS Series runs on the Swiss Made Sellita SW200 — an automatic calibre beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, respected across the industry for its reliability and, just as important, its serviceability. Any competent watchmaker in the world can maintain it for decades. That matters more than any marketing claim.
Materials chosen for decades, not for photos. Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Precision-machined stainless steel. Components selected because of how they age, not how they look under a ring light.
Controlled production. We build in limited runs — not to manufacture artificial hype, but because small batches are the only honest way for an independent brand to control quality. Every case, every dial, every movement gets checked. That doesn't scale to mass production, and we're fine with that.
A 5-year international warranty. Twice what most of the industry offers, because we expect these watches to outlast the warranty by a wide margin.
The Name
People ask about the name. MAES comes from Maestres — my family name, carrying the ideas of lineage, discipline, and mastery. LUX is Latin for light: clarity, purpose, vision.
Heritage, illuminated by intention. That's the whole brand in four words.
Why This Matters to You
If you're reading this, you're probably somewhere on the same path I was: past the point of buying a watch just because an algorithm showed it to you, but skeptical of paying five figures for a name. You want mechanical authenticity. You want to know what's inside the case. You want a watch that means something when you put it on in the morning — the way my father's Bulova meant something.
That's the collector MAESLUX exists for.
My father's watch taught me that a timepiece isn't about telling time. Your phone does that better. A mechanical watch is about how you carry time — with discipline, with presence, with respect for the craft of hundreds of tiny components working in silence on your wrist.
Time is everywhere. Value is not.
This is MAESLUX. Time Is Luxury.
